Geography of Barbados

When compared to many of the islands in the Caribbean there are a few physical features and characteristics about Barbados that stand out. Some of these include the relatively flat topography (highest point is Mount Hillaby at 1,116 feet or 340 metres), the coral and limestone composition of the landmass and the sparse occurrence of rivers or inland bodies of water.

Well, there is something else that can be added to that list….off-shore islands. Currently, the only ‘island’ of note off of Barbados is Culpepper Island which is situated off the coast of St. Phillip between Skeete’s Bay and Ragged Point. The ‘inhabitants’ of this tiny island (which measures around 25 by 30 yards and stands at 20 feet above sea level) are the occasional black belly sheep!

Our next post in the Geography of Barbados series will continue to look at off-shore islands and provide insight on an island that used to exist off the coast of Barbados.
